How well do you know your friends? No really, think about it. Do you know if your buddy Tom would date someone with giant anime sized eyes if they were the ruler of the planet? What about Suzanne, would she date a centaur who is a world famous fashion designer? How about yourself? Would you date a person who owns a moon colony, but also steals your tears while you sleep?
You’ll find those answers and more in the game Billionaire Banshee. It’s a card game for two to ten players, with the best games usually having between four and eight. The game puts players out on a date with some interesting individuals. One person draws and reads both a Perk (something generally good about their date) and a Quirk (something generally not good) to describe their date. They then secretly decide whether to Date or Deny that person. After that, it is up to the other players to place a bet on whether they think the player who drew the cards would Date or Deny that person. Everyone (including the person on the date) places a vote card face down so no one else can tell what they’ve chosen, and then everybody goes around one at a time revealing what they chose and why. The player on the date reveals their answer last and everyone who guessed correctly receives a point. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins!
It’s a very simple system, but that doesn’t stop it from being hours of fun. There are several variations on the score keeping and game play as well, so you can tailor it to suit your preferences. One of my personal favorites is taking a drink for every time you guess wrong. Another great suggestion is a play style where rather than being out on a date, you are on a dating show. All the other players draw one random Perk and Quirk each and then they try and win a date with you.
Billionaire Banshee is a fantastic party game. It can really help loosen up a room and it gets everyone talking. It’s almost more fun to play with strangers, because you have practically nothing to go off of that will help you with you guesses. It’s a great way to learn more about your friends too. I will never un-hear some of the things I have heard while playing this game. Seriously. Never.
The cards are illustrated in an 8-bit style, which is both charming and strangely adorable at times. I recommend that players be at least 16 years old, but 18+ is a safer bet. That is because some of the cards can be a bit mature in nature. Oh, don’t make that face! It’s a date, what did you expect. There are three main styles of Perks and Quirks; Reality- maybe your date is a slacker, or a CEO, Fantasy- your date could be a cyclops or poop your favorite flavor ice cream, and Sexy- they could give you an orgasm by simply kissing you, or maybe they need you to wear a bear suit during sex. The cards all have markings on the back to make it easy to see what’s coming up. This also comes in handy if you want to take out certain cards for different crowds. Want to see how weird your friends can get? Take out reality. Looking to get a conversation started without spooking anyone? Take out Fantasy and Sexy. Don’t want to know EVERYTHING about your relatives? Take out sexy. It makes customizing the game a piece of cake.
Billionaire Banshee is available on Amazon for $25.00. It is published by Breaking games and was created by Steven Bailey who funded it through a successful Kickstarter in 2014. Pick it up and learn a thing or two about the people you think you know, and yourself.
