With Black History Month just around the corner, it seems like a perfect time for Universal to release 2019’s Harriet on to Blu-ray.
Now, I’ll save you a lot of the details on the plot for this. Obviously this is a biopic about Harriet Tubman, who is well known for being one of the conductors in the Underground Railroad. Hopefully most of you know the story, but if you don’t, you probably should see this movie for that reason alone.
But even if you are familiar with this iconic woman and her story, I believe that Harriet has a lot to offer. Not least of all is simply seeing the story come to life on the screen. This dark stain on our nation’s history is tough to watch, but it is important to face these uncomfortable facts and learn from our past.
However, where this film excels is in the details. Cynthia Erivo plays the titular character flawlessly, and is supported by a fantastic cast who all make it feel like you are peering in on history as it happened. Couple that with some beautiful sets and costume design and you have a gorgeous film.
But what I really mean by the details is all of the things that I did not know about Harriet Tubman. Now granted, I am no history enthusiast, but I was surprised at a great deal many parts of this movie. Honestly, I thought there was a lot of creative freedom taken, but turns out this woman was just way more incredible than I had previously believed.
In fact, this woman is so interesting and surprising, it almost felt like this movie was complete fiction. This isn’t the films fault by any means, but I’ll warn you now going into this that there are some borderline unbelievable aspects to her story.
Overall, this is an important story of one woman’s fight for freedom (for herself and others), and it should be watched by everyone.
Not only is Harriet a beautiful film that tells a great story, it looks absolutely fantastic in HD. With so many outdoor scenes in the south, there is a great range of colors as well as some great low light scenes. Generally speaking, these dark scenes look perfect, and, stylistically, there are some reference quality scenes in this movie.
This release features a DTS-Master Audio 7.1 channel surround mix that absolutely sounds perfect. I wish there was more action to be had, because boy is it exciting when the action picks up.
This Blu-ray release comes in a standard blue case with a nice slipcover. For special features, you get the following:
- Deleted Scenes
- Her Story – A five minute look at the real life of Harriet Tubman
- Becoming Harriet – A focus look at Cynthia Erivo’s performance in the film
- Audio Commentary – with director Kasi Lemmons
Our Recommendation for Harriet:
Harriet is a really fascinating and worthwhile story that I believe everyone would benefit from having seen. It is beautifully shot, wonderfully acted, and comes in a great package. Pick it up!
