So, I learned a new thing this week – there is a thing called “accidental girlfriend” in anime. I also learned something about myself this week. I like accidental girlfriend anime. It’s hilarious.
Since I particularly enjoy sharing fun facts, accidental girlfriend anime is an anime show or movie where the main protagonist is a hapless and usually rather unassuming male who for some inexplicable reason ends up with one or more gorgeous women vying for his affections. In the case of To Love Ru, our main man is Ritu, and he is finally about to tell his crush Haruna that he is in love with her. That is, until an a voluptuous alien princess appears in his bath tub while he’s soaking up. To make matters worse, his instincts caused him to reach out and squeeze the first thing that he could reach – her chest. Little did he know that this is the way to propose on her home world and he is now engaged to the princess.
If this doesn’t spark some level of interest and humor within you, then you probably are not going to want to invest the time to this series. But if this sounds just ridiculous enough to be worth a watch, I can highly recommend you check it out.
This English dubbed and “uncensored” release features the whole of the series, which is anime for season one of the show. There are 26 episodes of utter nonsense, and I couldn’t get enough of it. This series is full of over the top humor and zany situations that Ritu and his space fiancee, Lala, get into, and basically every episode has at least one moment where you just can’t help but laugh out loud at what happens. Most of these laughs are usually around Ritu’s reaction to Lala being naked for some dumb reason or another. You see, she is basically naked by default, but thanks to her little clothing minion, she can wear whatever she wants on a whim – and changing usually involves a very anime sequence showing her naked and having some sort of orgasmic reaction to clothing appearing around her curvy body. This show holds no punches in the risque humor.
As I mentioned earlier, this show is uncensored, but not as much is shown as you would imagine when you hear of uncensored anime. Nipples are usually still hard to see in the hazy of shower mist or anime lighting around the women when their clothes are inexplicably blown off for one reason or another. But still, this show is not appropriate for all audiences. But hey, anime nudity for those who seek it. Honestly, it wasn’t egregious in any way and nudity is almost always wrapped in some high school male humor that it just works here.
The English dub was surprisingly decent here, and was translated in a way that felt natural. All of the voice acting was entertaining and never got annoying or felt cheap, which is nice.
In the end, if you like your anime with nudity and low brow humor, then To Love Ru is a really fun show with twice as many episodes as the traditional series. It packs a lot of funny into these episodes and also hits a lot of anime tropes that just add to the laughs.
As is usual with animated films and shows on Blu-ray, the highlight is usually in the color richness and the clear and crisp picture quality. To Love Ru is generally pretty good in both places. The original run of the series was in 2008, which might be the reason that this doesn’t exactly impress in terms of visual quality. Don’t get me wrong, it looks quite good on screen, but it just doesn’t pop off of the screen or stand out in the crowd. The main draw here is the humor and the show itself, not the visual fidelity.
The audio track is a DTS Master Audio 2.0 channel track, so there is no surround to be speaking of, but the show sounded just fine to me nonetheless. The main talking point on this release is the English dub, which I talked about already, and to some, that is likely the reason for snagging this release. But for those who prefer subs to dubs, the Japanese track is present, too. Don’t you worry.
This Blu-ray release comes in a standard blue case with a Blu-ray disc. Sadly, the only other special feature is the trailer for the film.
Our Recommendation for To Love Ru:
This show is all sorts of ridiculous and I enjoyed my time with it thoroughly. The English dub is not bad at all, and many of you perverts out there will enjoy the uncensored aspect as well. But honestly, it’s just a great and fun show that has gotten a great Blu-ray release thanks to Sentai. I’d say snag it up if you love inappropriate humor or want to try out the “accidental girlfriend” genre.
