Chuck Palahniuk is extremely well known for his dark and twisted humor, which often tends to make his audience uncomfortable, yet oddly inspired. Anyone who has seen or read Fight Club can attest to the gritty, too-real social commentary that the author weaves into the story. Everything is impossible, but it’s too true at the same time.
So, every time that Palahniuk releases something new, I am drawn to it much in the same way that an addict smells out that next high. Speaking of that high, his stories have bled from words on the page into films and comic book series as well, so there’s a cure for all forms of itch in the backlog; all you have to do is look.
The newest, latest venture from Mr. Palahniuk, and the reason you are delving into this week’s Fund-It Friday, is a film adaptation of Lullaby. Originally published in 2002, and featuring an adorable dead little bird on the cover, this story is a horror-satire that has won the Bram Stoker Award for Best Novel in the year of it’s release.
Following a newspaper reporter named Carl Streator, Lullaby tells the story of a man who’s lost his family due to mysterious circumstances, only to find out years later that a strange nursery rhyme has the power to kill whoever it has been read to. A nursery rhyme that killed his wife and child. Furthermore, someone appears to be weaponizing this fact. So Streator, armed with the nursery rhyme in his memory, sets out to rid the world of those who would abuse this power, and to destroy every copy of it’s existence.
As you can no doubt tell, this story is just rife with everything that makes us love Palahniuk. Lucky for us, independent filmmakers from Palahniuk’s hometown of Portland, Oregon want to bring this to the silver screen. They just need $250,000 to get it started. Well, a minimum of $250k. The good news is that, as I am writing this, they have 13 days remaining in their Kickstarter campaign and are less than $10,000 shy of their goal. At this point, funding is a sure bet, but every dollar added to the pile will make this movie that much greater.
Oh, and I should mention that they have the one and only Chuck Palahniuk on board to be the executive producer. He also worked on the script with the filmmakers, so rest assured this product will be legitimate.
Funding options start at the typical $1 “Thank you” level and go up to $25,000 for the Ultimate Lullaby Backer Package. What’s that 25 large get you?
- A personal call from the director

Pretty cool, if you ask me, but honestly the important and best prizes are in the more obtainable levels. Several leather-bound and autographed copies of Palahniuk’s work are available at the $500 range, and for $600, you can get the little birdy from the cover of Lullaby tattooed on yourself. A regular copy of Lullaby signed by the author will set you back $200, and there are other signed goodies as well.
For the majority of us out here in the masses who want to help and get a little something something for our contribution, I recommend the $50 contribution level. This is the lowest level that nets you a DVD or Blu-ray copy of the film, as well as a digital download, PDF of the script, and personalized library card. Oh and a t-shirt to boot.
So head over to their campaign page here and give ’em some money!
