Welcome to another edition of Fund It Friday. Today, we are exploring The Walking Dead No Sanctuary, a cooperative and competitive tile based board game for 2-4 players, hoping to emulate the high drama of AMC’s hit zombie TV show.
The project is being undertaken by Cryptozoic Entertainment, who are no strangers to the tabletop arena. Game mechanics are going to attempt to simulate the group dynamic of the series in an interesting way. One player is charged with being the leader. The leader will be forced to make some group encompassing decisions during gameplay. The other players will decide whether to support these decisions. All characters/players have their own secret motivations (not to be shared with other players or the group) that will affect how they respond to these decisions. Depending on whether they choose to support their leader or rail against them, the group may lose Trust, increase Stress, or lose Morale. How this will all play out in a boardgame is anyone’s guess at this point, but the system sounds both interesting and ambitious. Here is hoping the team at Cryptozoic can pull it together.
Players will have a stable of characters from the show to choose from for play (depending on how deeply down the product rabbit hole you are willing to go; more on that in a minute). For the base game (you can secure a copy of this in exchange for a $40 pledge), you can plays as Rick, Glenn, Daryl and Andrea. All playable characters will also feature what appear to be high quality and detailed miniatures. Two expansions are also available, both via higher pledge levels and available for purchase separately, adding new map tiles, zombies, and more character choices. Some Kickstarter exclusive characters are also available both in pledge tiers and via separate purchase on the site.
As of this writing, the project has secured just over $200k of the quarter million dollars it is seeking. With just over 2 weeks left to go, this project will likely be funded, but only if you throw your dollars at it. The stand alone game will likely run $40 when it hits shelves; Cryptozoic is hoping to launch July of 2017. So, pull up a chair, pour yourself a big heaping bowl of post apocalypse drama-Os, and kill some walkers with your friends in The Walking Dead No Sanctuary.
