Today’s Fund It Friday brings us a chance to back a a beautiful game based on a fantasy graphic novel. Battle Chasers Nightwar is the creation of Airship Syndicate Studios, an indie game developer composed of former Vigil Games personnel (from Darksiders Fame). Joe Madureira heads up the team, and is the original creator of Battle Chasers, which ran from April 1998 to September 2001. The comic series was successful in the American spectrum, which was notable as it was a fantasy setting rather than a superhero one. While the series had some critical acclaim, the comic run suffered from some scheduling release problems, and the series ended on issue #9 after 3 and a half years.
Enter Battle Chasers Nightwar, a self proclaimed love letter to the JRPG genre, set in the Battle Chasers universe. The game has been asking for funding for a very short time, and is already approaching their $500k ask. Judging by both the Kickstarter video and the gameplay trailer (featured below), the game deserves every penny. While featuring mostly traditional turn based battle gameplay, the animations have been updated using techniques often reserved for triple A titles, and the game features some action RPG sequences, as well as hand drawn cut scenes that are just gorgeous. The characters look to be quite varied, and includes what appears to be a giant armor mech, which has me quite excited! Characters can be upgraded by finding hidden lore in the game, and unique attacks change the viewpoint from 2d to full 3d.
Welp, this has our vote. A $20 pledge gets you a copy of the game when it launches. Check the gameplay trailer and see if this is for you! Funding ends 10/10, make sure you stop by Airship Syndicate’s Kickstarter page and get your copy on lock.
If you are interested in the comic that spawned this world, you can still pickup the anthology on Amazon – Battle Chasers Anthology.
