Stars and Stones! It’s time for another Fund it Friday! Today, we are featuring something near and dear to me – a new cooperative card game featuring everyone’s favorite gumshoe wizard, Harry Dresden!
The Dresden Files Cooperative Card Game (DFCO for short) casts 1-5 players as Harry and friends (featuring the likes of Karrin Murphy, Susan Rodriguez, and Michael Carpenter, with more being added each stretch goal!), and pits them against the dark forces operating in and around Chicago. Each character has a special deck that details their skills and abilities. Currently, there are 12 characters in the game, with a 13th tied to a stretch goal within striking distance.Players will then choose a deck based on a Dresden Files book, and will play through and attempt to overcome challenges and enemies related to the events of that book. Although originally planned with just 5 book decks, stretch goals have already been reached to boost this total to 12. There is also a Side Jobs-esque random scenario generator based on the story collection of the same name.
Gameplay includes a shared resource pool, card and deck mechanics, and the rolling of fate dice to determine success or failure in any given game. Players can attempt to perform actions themselves, or can generate resources for the group to use as a whole. Creator Eric B Vogel and the team at Evil Hat Productions have put together a stellar learn to play video to help you learn the ropes. As an avid Dresden fan, I am extremely excited by the prospect of Dresden Files Cooperative Card Game. The content already gets my vote. Beyond that, however, it appears as though the creators are as in tune with board gaming needs as they are with excellent modern urban fantasy literature. The crafted dice evoke the right sorts of feelings for a Dresden game, the box will contain dividers, foam blocks, and card insert trays to keep things organized, and most importantly: there will be room in the main box for stretch goal and expansion content!
While the project is already funded (7 times over as of this writing), Evil Hat Productions has not rested on it’s laurels sitting atop a huge pile of backer cash. They have been proactive about establishing stretch goals, and have created new ones as the semi-rabid Dresden fan base pounds through them. At this time, 10 of 12 stretch goals have been reached, with a little under 2 weeks funding time left (come on, let’s unlock that Mouse deck folks!). Even better, it looks like their success has given them some pull with author Jim Butcher himself: the final stretch goal includes a sneak peak at the first chapter of upcoming novel Peace Talks. Hells Bells, I am fangirl-ing so hard right now.
Ok, calm down. Take a breath. That’s better. The base game will run $39 (and backer levels include the game starting at the same value) with $10 bones in shipping for those located domestically in the US. Expansions can be added for $10 a pop, although it appears there are pledge levels where you might save a buck or 2 on these as well.
So, what are you still doing here? Get out there and back this thing! RUN! PARKOUR! Without you in the fight, the Red Court or the things that lurk in the Nevernever could overrun Chicago any minute! Dresden and company NEED YOU!
