Having trouble deciding on a new game to try out? Maybe you are a huge sports fan. Maybe you haven’t played much since the NES days. No matter what your experience is, here are 5 Reasons To Play: MLB The Show 16! MLB the Show 16 was released on both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 (however some features are not available on the PS3 version) and the version talked about here is the PS4 release. Online connectivity is required to get the full experience.
Reason #1 – Diamond Dynasty
Diamond Dynasty is an awesome game mode. It taps into the childlike nostalgia of opening a pack of cards hoping for one of your favorites. This time, instead of keeping them protected in a plastic sleeve just to be admired, or using them in your bicycle spokes, you unlock that player to be used in games. The more players you unlock, the more you get to use in games, which in turn unlocks more players. Players are separated into tiers of talent with weekly updates. There are commons, bronze, silver, gold, and diamond rankings. Eventually you can unlock entire teams and flashback cards of important players from that teams history. You get “stubs” which are the in game currency that you can then use to buy more packs of cards, or play the market by buying and selling players, stadiums and equipment. Winning games, logging in every day and reaching statistical milestones all help you earn more stubs and random cards for your team collection. You can play both online and offline games against other player or the computer.
Reason #2 – Road to the Show
Ever wish that you could make it to the big leagues from the comfort of your own couch? Well now you can, thanks to Road to the Show. You start by creating your own player. You can adjust your look to practically anything you can think of, as well as adjusting your swing, pitching style, what music you walk up to and the name the announcers use. Then you start off trying to impress scouts by your fielding, batting or pitching ability, depending on what position you desire to play. You get inserted into a draft and you go to your team! Your player starts in double A and get points for each game depending on how you perform. You use those points (along with occasional mini games) to train up your player in a variety of areas. As you get better and the years go by you eventually get called up the AAA and even the big leagues. It’s fun to be able to play a game only from your point of view (the game fast forwards to only your at bats, fielding opportunities or days pitching).
Reason #3 – Franchise
Franchise mode is just what it sounds like. You take over a current MLB team and manage it the best way you see fit. Do you decide to trade off all your aging players for rookie phenoms, or do you get an all veteran ace pitching staff? You can do anything you like, but be careful that your adjustments don’t make your current players upset. Contracts and playing time have different requirements that must be met in order to keep a happy clubhouse. Of course everyone is on your side if you consistently win, much like real life.
Reason #4 – Conquest
Conquest is a really cool idea: what if we mixed the board game Risk with baseball? Your created team (consisting of players you’ve unlocked during Diamond Dynasty) goes against other teams in a battle for territory. It is a turn based strategy game of figuring out just how much to expand your territory, while also protecting your home base from invaders. The more fans you have, the easier the difficulty is in playing games. Your goal is to take over the whole map, defeating each team’s stronghold by playing baseball games in their home stadium. Each time you defeat a team you get extra player cards, and special cards are available after beating the stronghold. It’s a really fun and addicting way to play that honestly could be a game released singularly on it’s own merits.
Reason #5 – Battle Royale
Battle Royale is basically a fantasy draft. You go online and pick between a choice of different players in each round until your team is filled. Then you get matched up with online players to play 3 inning games. The winner moves on to bigger and better spoils, while two losses gets you sent back to the showers. Cards can also be unlocked here, with some players being available nowhere else in the game. You also win a pack even if you lose.
For me this is the best baseball game on the market. It is more of a simulation rather than an arcade game but there are enough fun different modes to keep you interested regardless of your preferences. MLB the Show 16 gets my highest recommendation!
