Okay, so you have signed up to take part in the 12th Annual October Horror Movie Challenge. Now what? Now you do some planning! The Horror Movie Challenge Checklist is one of my favorite parts of the challenge every year. This year looks to be no different. It actually looks a little bit tougher than last years despite some pleasant repeat names.
To help those new in the challenge, I’m going to offer some tips. Below you will find the checklist and some movies I recommend watching to help fill it out. Sometimes, the best is to plan to watch a handful of movies that knock off a number of the checklist items. Once you’ve made it through half or more of the checklist, I then recommend getting more adventurous and picking a bunch of titles that you’ve never seen.
There are certainly more movies that will handle multiple checklist items, but these are some I can recommend as a good start. If you take a few of these recommendations, you will accelerate your completion of the checklist and afford some time to check out more items that you’ve never heard of before. I’ll be working my way through this checklist over the course of the month and I invite you to join me. I find it to be a blast.
Bang for the Buck Watches
Each of these movies will help you knock out a number of checklist items with one viewing.
Waxwork: This one is full of horror characters that you can quickly account for on the list. You have vampires, a werewolf, a mummy, and zombies.
Gremlins: This knocks off Joe Dante in both the director and the legends of commentary item. It also takes place during Christmas and is PG rated.
Fright Night: This counts for Chris Sarandon, vampire, and night in the title.
Fright Night Part II: This counts for Barney Burman, vampire, and night in the title.
Dracula (1974): This one counts for TV movie, Dan Curtis, Richard Matheson, and vampires.
[Rec]: This is good for knocking out a Spanish language title as well as Jaume Balagueró and zombies.
Piranha 3D: 3D film and killer animal items.
The Host: This is a Korean film that knocks out monster, K-Horror, and adds Korean foreign language.
Brotherhood of the Wolf: French foreign language, killer animal, and European list. Also, it is a really cool
looking movie, but long.
Odd Thomas: Recently deceased due to Anton Yelchin’s unfortunate accident. Also includes ghosts and Satan worshipers.
Stir of Echoes: Kevin Bacon stars in this Richard Matheson movie with ghosts. You could possibly argue revenge to an extent, or psychological thriller.
Monster Squad: Vampires, werewolf, Frankenstein, and mummy. Also includes
Tom Noonan and is a lot of fun.
Horror of Dracula: This covers Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, and Terrence Fisher. By having Cushing and Lee, it also counts for two horror legends.
Chopping Mall: Good for retail, killer robots, and Jim Wynorski.
Harder to Fulfill Items
These are some movies that will help you take care of the items that tend to be a little more difficult to check off.
Evil Dead: NC-17 rating. Also counts for Rob Tapert and haunting.
Evil Dead 2: X Rating. Also counts for Rob Tapert and haunting.
Gremlins: PG Rating
Gremlins 2: PG Rating
Repo! The Genetic Opera: Musical. Also meets Bill Moseley item.
