The last few years have been good for female led comedies, and this year especially been one to keep the topic of discussion going with Ghostbusters being such a divisive reboot. However, one that went a little under the radar from a lot of people that I know, is Bad Moms, starring Kristen Bell, Mila Kunis, and Kathryn Hahn. This movie is being released by Universal on Blu-ray, and today we’re gonna take a look.
The Movie Itself (3.5/5)
Bad Moms follows Amy (Kunis), a mother of two who is having a rough week. Her husband was caught having an online affair, her kids are spoiled and entitled, and the lead of her parent teacher association is being a total asshole. At this point, Amy is fed up with it all and decides that she needs to just stop caring, and stop being such a good mom – she’s going to be a bad mom.
Joined by Carla (Hahn) and Kiki (Bell), this trio of bad bitches go rogue, not putting up with anything from anyone and taking care of themselves first, leading up to an all out turf war with the PTA leader Gwendolyn (played by Christina Applegate).
All three of the leading ladies in this raunchy comedy are in fact, mothers, and you can certainly tell that they are having a blast playing at the difficulties of being a parent. Having had our first child about a year and a half ago, I’m finding a lot more humor here than I’m sure I would have before. The chemistry is there, and the jokes are for the most part spot on. I had a lot of fun with this movie.
Having said that, I think that Bad Moms does miss on a several jokes and sort of feels forced in places, plus it has more than it’s share of cliche scenes. But rumor has it that the reception was good enough to spawn a Bad Dads sequel, so we’ll see. Either way, I believe that this movie is worth the watch.
Visuals/Picture Quality (4/5)
Bad Moms looks… pretty good on Blu-ray. The movie itself isn’t really visually stimulating with a lot of effects, so you won’t be in awe while watching this movie. The picture is quite detailed and the colors are bright and vibrant, there is just a lack of pop when it comes to textures that you really makes a stand out visual experience. There is also more than it’s fair share of that glow-y dreamlike haziness in this film. I’m not sure if that is intentional or not, but it’s certainly there.
Score/Audio Quality (4.5/5)
The audio track was quite exciting for this release. There are several bassy music scenes in clubs and party situations, and a surprising amount of surround use as well. Dialog never gets lost in the fray, and the car scene (you’ll know it when you see it) was a pleasure to listen to.
Special Features (3/5)
Not a ton of extra content here, but the standout for me is definitely the mom interviews. As I’ve mentioned previously, each of the films four main stars are mothers, so what better than to have their moms on set and discuss raising them! It’s actually quite entertaining and was well worth the watch, to me.
- Gag reel
- Deleted Scenes
- Cast & Mom Interviews
Universal has brought Bad Moms to us on Blu-ray in a standard two disc amaray case with single sided sleeve and a matching slipcover. Inside you will find an insert with a code for the UV copy, a DVD copy of the film, and the Blu-ray disc. The art is lackluster on these discs, as the DVD is a generic black with the title and legal text being the only visuals. Similarly, the Blu-ray disc is quite dull, being mostly transparent save for the name, legal text, and Blu-ray logos in blue.
- Aspect ratio: 2.40:1
- DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1
Runtime 101 Mins
Bad Moms, while targeted at the female audience, is an underrated comedy that I think most people would enjoy. If you are a parent, you’ll definitely find some relatable humor in the mix, even if it feels a little forced at times. I would probably recommend a rent or stream before buying, but those who do most likely won’t be disappointed.
