Hey you! Did you remember that Father’s Day is coming up? I can tell you that if this wasn’t going to be my first one as a Father, I would likely forget, as I do each year, until about the day before.
So, instead of scrambling at the last moment for gift ideas for dear old Pops, why not skip the worrying and give the gift that you know he will love? Some great movies, of course!
Here are some recent releases on DVD and Blu-ray that Dad would love to receive this Sunday (since we all know that sports car he’s been eyeing just isn’t in the budget).
13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi
Good for dads who: Love war films and intense drama
Already being hailed as one of the best American Soldier films since Blackhawk Down, 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi features an intense, emotional look into the historic event that many people know of, but few actually know about. Starring (of all people) John Krasinski from The Office, this Michael Bay flick is sure to cement it’s place in the rankings of great soldier dramas.
Star Trek: The Next Generation (The Complete Series)
Good for dads who: Love space….the final frontier
While this will certainly be the most expensive set on this list, sometimes you just have to spend a little extra money to tell Dad just how much you really love him. There’s no better way than with the gift of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Featuring all seven seasons on 41 (holy crap) discs, this set has it all, including all of the special features that dad could ever want. Need I remind you that if Dad owns this set, you can borrow it whenever you want? That thought hadn’t crossed your mind yet, had it? Don’t worry, number two, just make it so!
Ballers Season One
Good for dads who: Love sports, money management, and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson
Ballers just might be my favorite new show of last year, and with Season Two just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to get Dad the first season so he can catch himself up in time. Featuring a stellar one-two combination of The Rock and Rob Corddry, this sports dramedy is wildly entertaining, Ballers follows Spencer Strasmore (Johnson) as a retired pro football player trying to make his name in the world of finance. Anyone who hasn’t seen this show is seriously missing out.
Jaws 2, 3, and The Revenge (and Jaws, cause you aren’t cheap and he needs the whole set)
Good for dads who: Love SHAAAAAAAARKS
Ok, ok, I know, this is actually four movies, but I don’t care. The Jaws series has been making moviegoers fear the water for many, many years, and what better gift to Daddy than to remind him that real men can be afraid too? The whole series is finally out on Blu-ray, so now is the time for a marathon…just don’t watch these before going swimming. So go out and grab Jaws, Jaws 2, Jaws 3, and Jaws: The Revenge!
The Great Outdoors
Good for dads who: Like camping
The Great Outdoors has been a family favorite for as long as I can remember. Somewhere between “the bare-ass bear” and “lips and assholes” is a surprisingly family friendly comedy about being in tight quarters with those you love, coming of age, and the tragedies of family vacations. In my opinion, one of John Candy’s best, this movie has an endless supply of great lines and plenty of laughs. Best served with a 96 oz steak!
And that is it! Five(ish) recommendations of recent DVD and Blu-ray releases for Dad on his day! Also, we do realize that a couple of these are TV shows, but if you show us a Dad who doesn’t like TV, then we’ll show you a surprised face.
One last thing, and this is important: don’t forget a card, and if you’re too far away to hand deliver a gift, why not at least give the old man a call? You know he’d like to hear from you.
