Every week we will be bringing you some highlights of the new Blu-ray and 4K UHD releases coming to home media. We won’t feature every release because there may be more than you think. Especially if you are normally just used to what you see in Best Buy or Target on your trips. For a full list of releases please take a look at our coming soon release list. For now, kick back and see what releases we here at TNM think you should take a look at. We’ll also note which of those we already have reviews for or any upcoming. These are the new Blu-ray releases for the week of 12/12.
20th Century Fox
Well before they get sold to Disney, they still have a slate of things to release. Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit might not have been the big box office smash Fox had hoped, it did garner quite a bit of praise and might find new life on Blu-ray. The biggest Blu-ray release will probably go to Kingsman The Golden Circle. Biggest in sales and also the fact that between that and its predecessor getting a matching Steelbook® there will be no fewer than seven different versions.
Acorn Media
Friends of the Nerd Mentality, Acorn TV has a few Blu-rays debuting on December 12th, Acorn DVD and Blu-ray feature two of Acorn TV’s most popular series, “A smart, gentle comedy with loads of wit and zest” (The Globe and Mail), DOC MARTIN, Series 8 starring Martin Clunes (Men Behaving Badly) with season finale guest star Sigourney Weaver. Also, being released is the “Superb British series… Great performances and superb characterizations” (San Francisco Chronicle), the award-winning detective drama GEORGE GENTLY: The Complete Collection and GEORGE GENTLY, Series 8 (Series Finale). All three DVD/Blu-rays feature behind-the-scenes featurettes and superb guest stars.
Arrow Video
Is releasing the standalone films from the House set. You can read Alex’s thoughts on the two films and see if they might be right for you. Arrow Academy is also putting out Pulp starring Michael Caine.
Disney/Marvel
A surprise announcement and release from Disney/Netflix is Luke Cage Season 1 on four disc Blu-ray set. Unlike some of the other Marvel shows from Netflix, this one even has special features. Offstage at Harlem’s Paradise – Join stars Mike Colter (Luke Cage), Alfre Woodard (Mariah), Theo Rossi (Shades) and Simone Missick (Misty) in an intimate round table discussion about life during production of Luke Cage: The Complete First Season. Even though I got an email stating the release date, it still hasn’t populated on Amazon yet. Luckily there is Best Buy, though they don’t have a release date listed as of this post so… who knows.
HBO
Our friends at HBO have some shows coming out. I’ve never heard of it but it has seven seasons, so must be somewhat popular. Games of Thrones is releasing with a whole slew of exclusives along with the regular release. Target has one with a bonus feature. Best Buy has three of them including two Steelbooks® one with a cream egg (Cadbury?) and one with red.
Vinegar Syndrome
Last but certainly not least for our Blu-ray highlights is our friends at Vinegar Syndrome. They always bring something a littler perverse but enjoyable. This week should be no different as we get Pick Up director Bernard Hirschenson’s ode to mysticism is a surreal and erotic trip. Also, Seeds/Vapors from Andy Milligan who was one of the most significant underground filmmakers working in 60’s sexploitation. Both worth a look if you are into these genres.
