The Shining (1980)
This week’s episode of the Digital Drive-In has Alex and Garrett stuck in a hotel in the winter. Yes, it’s the 1980 horror classic The Shining! Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd and Scatman Crothers star in this delightfully warm film that is fun for the whole dysfunctional family. Will Alex realize he has been the caretaker the whole time? Will Garrett get a bowl of chocolate ice cream? Will they both get enough sleep spending the night in room 237? You’ll just have to listen to find out for sure!
The film is from master filmmaker Stanley Kubrick, one of their favorites. The Drive-In boys break down scenes they specifically liked and details in the movie that hint at a much deeper story going on. Garrett takes the floor a bit more on this episode, as it was his pick. As always, it’s better to have seen the film before listening to the podcast since many plot points will be spoiled.
Also, the guys talk a bit about Twin Peaks and David Lynch so be prepared for some talking points that could spoil some of the original series at least. Let’s get on to the show!
