It is that time of year again, Scream Factory’s Summer of Fear Sale. This is the third year of the sale and I know a lot of people have been looking forward to and waiting for it to start. Now that the sale has begun, we at The Nerd Mentality want to help you make wise decisions in your Blu-ray purchases. Since we are fans of Scream Factory and we all have several of their releases, we thought we would break down the sale and share our thoughts for the titles we have.
For the first day of the sale we have Army of Darkness for $17.99. Not the best price it has ever been as several stores had it for $17.97 at one point (some with free shipping options), but still a solid price point for a great release. These daily announced titles are not indicated as only available for 24 hours, but I would expect that to be the case as it has been in some other Scream Factory sales. The full list of titles that are available for the Summer of Fear’s first week are:
The Dungeonmaster / Eliminators [Double Feature]
The House Where Evil Dwells / Ghost Warrior [Double Feature] Millennium / R.O.T.O.R. [Double Feature] Over Your Dead Body
Species III / Species: The Awakening
Honestly, for us at The Nerd Mentality, we are a little disappointed in this year’s Summer of Fear. At least for week one. We like the first day sale item, but the first week items don’t wow us with only one we really have anything to say about. Now, some of the rumored titles for the future (more on that later) do give us hope for the second week of the sale. With that said, two titles we would like to highlight on Day 1, Week 1 are:
Army of Darkness: “This is the movie that got me to really enjoy the dark humor that you can find in the Horror genre many years ago. While more of an Action-Adventure with Horror themes than straight Horror, this is still a great time. Bruce Campbell is at his best and all FOUR cuts of the film are included for a great package.” -Alex
The Hallow: “A family’s fight for survival against demonic woodland creatures. While there are some standard jump scares, the tension and creepiness get amped up throughout the film. It will keep you engaged while you wait to see who will survive.” – Rich
Now for those future titles. It seems that if you catch it just right before your computer loads the entirety of the page, then the titles behind the cards are visible. Thanks to deltatauhobbit at blu-ray.com, we have a list of probable titles for the upcoming two weeks daily and weekly items. Granted these are all just speculation at this point and our friends at Scream Factory could completely change the lineup. Some of the highlights that the The Nerd Mentality staff noticed for the rest of the sale:
Cherry Falls: “A good pace, some little twists and turns, and a wonderful finale will easily keep your attention. The conclusion to the mystery may leave something to be desired for some but I found it comparable to the zaniness of “giallo” films. Cherry Falls is much more Deep Red than it is Friday The 13th, yeah I said it!” -Dustin
The Babadook: “A very moody slow burn psychological horror feature. It eschews the modern sense of overloading with jump scares and instead sticks with long tension buildup.” – Alex
Texas Chainsaw Massacre: “” – Dustin
Bloodsucking Bastards: “A fun little romp in an office infested with vampires. A bit slow at times, but still a good time with Fran Kranz(“Dollhouse“, Cabin in the Woods) and others delivering some good laughs throughout.” – Alex
Zombie Fight Club: “I hope you like your zombie movies with cheesy over the top CGI, vicious and gruesome carnage, scantily clad Asian women and little to no story. If so then Zombie Fight Club from Scream Factory is right up your alley.” -Rich (Read more from Rich about this release here: Zombie Fight Club)
I hope these thoughts help you all make some wise choices and pick up some enjoyable titles from the Summer of Fear sale. Happy Watching!
