October is an exciting time for me as a movie fan. I enjoy the Horror genre year round, but it is always special when approaching Halloween. It feels more fitting the closer you get to Halloween. Also, much like Christmas and Thanksgiving, you have holiday themed movies and TV specials to accompany the season. It is just such a special time for vampires, witchery, zombies and cryptids of all sorts. As such, I am looking forward to the 12th Annual October Horror Movie Challenge.
What is it?
As a celebration of this time, the fine folks at DVDTalk have done a challenge for the last 12 years. Every year the gauntlet is thrown down in the Annual Horror Movie Challenge. It has grown over the years, but at its core it is a challenge to watch as many horror or Halloween related features in October as possible. The goal may be stated as 100 movies, but everyone makes their own personal goals, and the real point is to have fun. I think I’ve broken 100 twice in the several years that I’ve participated. Even the years where I had no shot at the magic number, I’ve still had a great time.
Every year, I set out with a few goals. I try to watch a few favorites. I seek out a few I’ve never heard about before (Netflix is useful for this). Typically, I try to knock out a full franchise or two. One of the best parts of every year is discovery of some new movies recommended by other challengers. Some may not have been not to my liking, but a few have become regular watches each year.
Is there more?
In addition to just watching as many movies as possible, there are a few other ways that you can have fun. Every year, there is a checklist created for users to pursue filling out. This checklist includes watching movies of different ratings, subjects (vampires, werewolves, etc.), various horror legends, decades of film and more. There is even a slot for a 3-D film. That should please Rich!
Beyond that, there is a theme for every night. You can watch a movie that fits in with that theme and discuss it with the others. There is also the 31-film subset. Every day in the challenge, there is a film chosen for those interested to watch. Each of these films has its own thread for the watchers to discuss it every day.
This year, like many years previous, I’m once again going to take part in the challenge. I’m sure Dustin will smash my numbers, but it is all in fun for me. As a part of October, the movies I’ll keep track of the movies I watch on here as part of a weekly roundup. I’ll list out the movies I’ve watched and give a short few sentences about it. Consider it a digest of my thoughts.
How do I join in?
Now, how do you get involved in all this fun? Pretty simple. Head over to DVD Talk and register. Then you go into the List Thread and reserve yourself a post for your list. Then, when October comes along, join in the fun and discussion over there. The list thread has the checklist, the subset and theme lists, as well as links to the discussion thread and resources.
At the beginning of the challenge, I’ll put up a post to prepare for the challenge. I will share some suggestions for movies that I like to watch every year. Additionally, I’ll offer some suggestions for titles to complete the checklist. Once the challenge is underway, I will be posting weekly roundups of movies I’ve watched and offer some quick thoughts on those movies so you can get an idea if it is worth adding.
I hope to see some of you joining in on the fun. Most of all, I just hope you all have a good time watching some fun movies in October. Good luck in the 12th Annual October Horror Movie Challenge.
